CURATORIAL ASSISTANT
Status: Part-time, 4-6 hours a day, 5 days a week (max. 28 hours/week)

Reports to: Curator
Location; Dallas, TX

The Curatorial Assistant provides professional administrative, exhibition, and research support to the Curator, as well as occasional support to the Director of Educational Programming. Responsibilities include organizing and maintaining schedule, contacts, and files for Curator; serving as liaison to other departments on behalf of Curator, when required; writing and editing text for exhibitions and publications; and assisting in research on artwork connected to exhibitions and publications.

Essential Functions

  • Make domestic and international travel arrangements (including airline, hotel, and ground transportation) and compile and verify itineraries for Curator and visiting artists
  • Coordinate with other departments and contractors for curatorial projects
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations
  • Maintain and archive files (electronic and hard copy) according to museum standards for Curator
  • Assist Curatorial Interns with their assigned projects as required
  • Handle incoming and outgoing telephone calls, email inquiries, and voicemail messages professionally and accurately
  • Receive visitors and tour them through the current exhibition, when required
  • Assist in planning events by facilitating out-of-town visitor logistics, processing invitations, and compiling/editing guest lists and RSVPs
  • Write/edit publication entries, label copy, PR text, and website text
  • Compose, edit, and proof correspondence, exhibition checklists, spreadsheets, and other detailed documents related to exhibitions
  • Communicate with galleries, collectors, and artists about logistics related to exhibitions loans
  • Prepare expense receipts and maintain budget/expense reports
  • Procure research materials on behalf of curators and outside scholars upon request
  • Work some evenings and weekends as required by exhibitions, special events, and tours
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • BA/BFA in Art, Art History, or Art Education required, MA/MFA in Art, Art History, or Art Educations preferred, with demonstrated interest and experience with contemporary art
  • Two years of administrative experience in a professional setting preferred

Key Qualifications

  • Ability to perform highly detail-oriented work with accuracy and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task at a fast pace and prioritize numerous responsibilities based on deadlines and importance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Experience writing and editing a variety of texts, including exhibition texts and labels, preferred
  • Software:
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
    • Experience with Photoshop preferred
    • Experience with WordPress (or other web content management system) preferred
  • Experience conducting object-based research, including bibliography, provenance, and exhibition history desirable
  • Ability to interact with supervisors, staff, patrons, dealers, artists, and trustees in a professional and considerate manner
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • General administrative and project management skills

Remote Work
The responsibilities of the Curatorial Assistant necessitate on-site work. Remote work is not an option for this position.

Compensation
Hourly, $30/hour
