"Wandering as a permanent position" is how Japanese artist Yukinori Yanagi (born 1959, Fukuoka) has long described his stance as an artist—unattached to any fixed notion of national or artistic identity. Beginning in 1989, the year of Emperor Hirohito's death and the close of the Shōwa era, he set out to dissolve the nation's fixed symbols—flags, emblems, the imperial chrysanthemum crest—into organic forms that shift with time and circumstance. Trained in Tokyo and then at Yale, where he completed an MFA in 1990, Yanagi rose to international prominence at the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993, where The World Flag Ant Farm received the Aperto award. Among the first postwar Japanese artists to cast an openly critical eye on his nation's myths, he interrogates the borders—national, ethnic, institutional—by which nations determine who belongs, and the symbols through which those boundaries are made to seem natural. Yanagi's work is the focus of the sixth iteration of WAREHOUSE:01—The Warehouse's series of single-artist exhibitions.

Central to his method is what he leaves undone. Yanagi constructs his works with machine-like precision, then withdraws from them, ceding the act of making to forces that follow their own course, like living ant colonies tunneling their own paths. The artist sets the conditions; time completes the work. What the viewer encounters is never a fixed image but a process—an emblem caught in the act of coming apart, its authority quietly relinquished by its author. The principle is clearest in the ant farm works, in which national flags are rendered in colored sand, sealed in acrylic boxes, and given over to the colony. As the insects burrow, the crisp emblems crack, bleed, and intermix until each design dissolves into the patient traffic of countless small bodies. The ant—migrant, wanderer, indifferent to the lines drawn above it—becomes Yanagi's precise figure for the permeability of every border. The same logic of dissolution runs through the works gathered here: the rising-sun Hinomaru and the imperial chrysanthemum rebuilt from the personal seals and fingerprints that sort citizens from foreigners; the American flag and the dollar bill undone by the colony; and the icons of American Pop art—Andy Warhol's Flowers and Jasper Johns' Three Flags—doubly appropriated and returned from mechanical reproduction to organic process.

In early earthworks rooted in Mono-ha—the late-1960s Japanese art phenomenon that arranged raw natural and industrial materials in dialogue with their sites—Yanagi rolled spheres of soil through museums and across contested landscapes. In red crayon drawings, he traces the daily wanderings of a single harvester ant; in cast iron he resurrects the warships of Japan's imperial navy from the plastic model kits of his 1960s childhood; and during a residency at Alcatraz he reconstructed the cell of Tomoya Kawakita, the Japanese-American man imprisoned there for treason. Recurring throughout are the emperor system and Japan's wartime conduct—subjects long silenced by the "Chrysanthemum Taboo" of self-censorship—and the experience of those the nation casts out: Korean residents, the colonized, the stateless.

What surfaces across these works is a dual condition Yanagi locates at the heart of Japanese identity: the gap between what the national myth proclaims and what the society sustains—citizens bound to the emperor system, minorities marked as permanent aliens. Yet he questions more than he denounces. Insisting that identity is the province of individuals rather than the state, he treats the nation as an "imagined community" and turns his work toward exposing its seams—letting time and the labor of small living things lay the boundary bare. The results reveal what Martin Heidegger once observed: that a boundary is "not that at which something stops, but…that from which something begins its presencing."
